Sole DXB celebrates one week since it opened its doors for the fourth year to some of the world’s finest purveyors in street culture, converging global and regional leaders from across music, style, sneakers, basketball and design. The Dubai-based street culture festival, with the support of Dubai Design District (d3), Cadillac, Pepsi, Timeout Dubai, and Vida Hotels and Resorts, shone a spotlight on the region’s understanding of global street culture, offering a unique take on its many components - cut with distinctive Middle Eastern flair.
As the dust settles on the d3 allotment, memories turn to some of the highlights of the festival: Mobb Deep debuting in Dubai with a 20 year celebration of Infamous; artist Alo Wala turning the basketball court into a full shack-out rave to her rap-infused Eastern beats; Bobbito Garcia trash talking ballers as they reached for annual glory in the Sole Above All Classic tournament; a one-of-a-kind talk from adidas legend Stan Smith; conversations with head of Puma Footwear and Select Yassine Saidi vs Chris Stamp (Stampd); a stripped back one-man show from Chicago-soulman Jesse Boykins III looking out across the Puma sun-drenched swimming pool; vibes from Iamnobodi, Mocity, The Recipe and many more; on-site costume-laden photo shoots from campaign photographer and artist Hassan Hassaj, including none other than DMC himself; a caged Miss Lily’s restaurant and bar providing a barbeque-hazed day and night den for all things Caribbean and some; and of course 10,000+ revelers coming together to flaunt their style and throw out shapes across this unique setting of the Gulf plains of Dubai.
Having begun life sneaker-focused, Sole DXB has grown into so much more – a melting pot of cultures, passions, styles and logos. This year, with a heavyweight billing taking in street culture’s key players both globally and regionally, DXB was truly center of the world. Bring on 2016.
