I Feel Like Pablo
Following up the release of the Yeezy Season 3 show, Artist Cali Thornhill Dewitt, who used the same typography for previous designs like his "Pour One Out" sweatshirts, lent his vision to the minimalistic yet bold apparel, fitting of the Pablo personality: loud and proud.
While much of the selection at the boutique was the same as what was sold at Madison Square Garden, a few new pieces were added to the collection including hoodies, graphic t-shirts, jackets and hats, ranging from $35 for an 'I Feel Like Pablo' knit beanie to $400 for the deconstructed vintage Levi's jean jackets scrawled with album lyrics and lined in leopard.
Kanye's Life of Pablo pop-up caused the expected chaos and then some. The store opened on Friday to a lengthy line of fans many of whom had queued up as early as Thursday. With just 15 shoppers admitted at a time, things got frenzied pretty fast. According to TMZ, the gathering on Wooster Street and several other nearby streets in NYC's SoHo neighborhood was so massive that the city had to shut down the entire block to accommodate the crowd.
The Pablo mini-emporium was bare with white walls and wooden racks. A lone projection with a montage, including menacing canine faces, violent explosions and rose bouquets plays on loop as a playlist of West's seventh album, The Life of Pablo, mixed with Future’s catalog, blare through the black Sonos speakers.
Kanye’s recent aspirations have been to conquer runways and closets with his Yeezy Season line. He told Zane Lowe during a 2013 BBC interview, "I've got ideas on color palettes. I've got ideas on silhouettes. And I've got a million people telling me why I can't do it. You know, that I'm not a real designer... I'm not a real rapper, either! I'm not a real musician, either! Like, I don't know how to play the piano. I'm an artist. I went to art college." By his own definition, the Pablo pop-up shop - is art, free of judgment and open to interpretation.
