GIVING ARTISTS A CREATIVE PLATFORM ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.
SHURE Sounds Of The City features Dubai artists Shebani, Menon and Reem Ekay.
Sounds of the City shows the story of young, emerging artists in Dubai and their unique sound. Giving each of these artists a platform, Shure MOTIV products enable creativity anywhere and everywhere through its MOTIV products – a range of mobile digital mics that can capture and record HQ sound outside of the studio.
A like Sole’s entity that supports and empowers local urban lifestyle, fashion and music; Shure’s “Sounds of the City” aims to create long-lasting relationships with a number of local artists in Dubai, to simplify the creative journey to success and give them a platform to create.
Born and raised in Dubai, the Iraqi singer-songwriter began her musical career performing across almost every local venue, before moving to London to study songwriting at BIMM (British and Irish Modern Music).
After playing a mixture of covers and original material at a number of venues in Dubai, Shebani felt her music had plateaued. Under the creative direction of RAYAN, Shebani began to explore new sounds and directions with her music, releasing her first EP, “Alter Ego”, bringing a significantly unexplored genre of music to the Middle East.
"There are hidden sides to each person; thoughts we submerge, emotions we contain, words we decide not to pick. In a world where control is perceived as the be-all end-all of everything, it is sometimes the parts concealed that measure our strength.”
Shebani represents the female singer-songwriter to embrace the challenges of modern-day relevance in music, whilst embodying the significance of reflection and truth. In her video she speaks about “self-love”, which has become a theme within her music, drawing from recent experiences and childhood inspirations.
Having a Sri Lankan father and a mother from the Philippines, Menon’s multi-ethnic upbringing has fuelled his lyrical content. Although born and raised in Dubai, Menon has constantly absorbed different cultures, opinions and mindsets, in which his music highlights.
Showing that there are two sides to every person, Menon’s video shows his confidence battle between his rapper self, and his actual self - Gerrard. Scratching below the surface of an outgoing, and hilarious Menon, is a vulnerable and honest Gerrard who he is trying to help be more confident.
Taking time to identify his style, Menon has partnered alongside local producer RAYAN to redevelop and engineer a sound that is uniquely different within the current world of rap and hip-hop. His distinctive signature balances contemporary flows and authentic content, discussing identity issues, modern-day relationships and purpose.
Menon’s latest release “Epiphany of a Misfit” is a statement of what modern hip-hop in Dubai really is.
Master of a multitude of creative professions, Reem Ekay dubs herself a “project based artist”. An architect shaping the city by day, and a music-maker of the city’s sound by night, Reem uses her poetry as lyrics for her neo-soul tracks.
Born and raised in Dubai, Reem believes the city’s metropolis culture and evolving skyline to be influential in her music and creative processes. The growing urban scene of Dubai is how Reem channels her unique sound, with her architectural roots being significant in all her creative processes.
Although she’s constantly growing as an artist, she is no secret to the music scene here in Dubai, having performed at the Music Room, Al Serkal Avenue and collaborated with brands such as Brownbook, Rooftop Rhythms, MINI COOPER Fashion and now SHURE.
